Picking the right GPS software and maps are easy if you follow these guidelines.
1. If I purchase the software maps, can I get upgrade when the new versions come out or I have to purchase again?
If new maps come out within a month or two of your purchase, there may
be free upgrade. Some manufacturers may offer an upgrade price but
generally you will have to buy a new copy.
2. How much memory do these software maps require?
Maps are generally big. Local area maps can be easily accommodated
in a few Megabytes but statewide maps are often 30 Megabytes or more
depending on the state and type of map.
3. Are there compatibility issues if I have an old GPS product but want to use some new software maps?
You will need to check with the GPS manufacturer. Map products are
designed for specific hardware and only the manufacturer can determine
compatibility.
4. What kind of maps will work in my GPS?
Only maps specifically designed for a brand of GPS will work in that
GPS. This is also true of mapping software on a PDA or PC. An exception
is mapping software that is designed to accept scanned maps which are
not really maps but are pictures of maps. Many people suggest that you
should first determine if you need any specialized maps such as fishing
maps, topo maps, marine maps, and then buy a GPS that supports those
maps.
